LOS ANGELES — Blue Seraph Productions stages a table reading Saturday, May 19, for its two features in development, Something Like Summer and The Dark Place. The event represents an important milestone in the films’ development process.

SECOND DRAFT scripts for Blue Seraph's two new feature film projects are ready for their table reading in Los Angeles on May 19.

WE ARE MORE fortunate than most independent filmmakers, in that investors put their faith in us early in the process, fully funding development for these two independent films. Development for our first feature, Judas Kiss, took place over the course of more than three years. That effort was aided by funders who knew our work in Star Trek, and wanted to support us as we moved into producing our own original work.

With The Dark Place and Something Like Summer, we’re applying what we’ve learned about development, financing and pre-production to move more quickly, more efficiently, through the process, to get to principal photography much faster than we did with our first feature.

THE DARK PLACE is a mystery-thriller written by Jody Wheeler. J.T. Tepnapa will direct.

With Judas Kiss, we walked into its table reading in spring 2008 (!!) with a 120-page script (by comparison, the shooting script  was 104 pages; the final cut of the film was the equivalent of 94 pages). Though the actors were seated, we recorded the reading with a three-camera setup, edited in real time like a live television show.

The readings for the two new screenplays will be staged similarly, using the resources of our production partner, Butterknife Network.

We have gathered an ensemble of 14 actors, including Sean Paul Lockhart, who has won raves for his co-starring role in Judas Kiss, and who is attached to star in The Dark Place.

Why are table readings so important?

  • It’s the first time the story comes to life. Try as one might, a writer can only guess how a script might actually look and feel to an audience. Hearing the words spoken by actual people, feeling the pace of how the story unfolds — these are valuable insights that help refine a screenplay into a final shooting script.
  • You can’t estimate how much a movie will cost without a final screenplay. Everything is based on the shooting script. When you consider that it costs thousands of dollars to shoot each page of a script, every line of dialog, every piece of narrative should be there because it must be there to move the story forward. You can’t afford to waste the dollars you raise on scenes or dialog you shouldn’t have shot.
  • When you begin the casting process, the images of live actors who voice the script help producers and the director imagine what actors eventually may play these roles.

At this point, it’s important to move these stories out of our heads, off of the paper, and a step closer to reality.

SOMETHING LIKE SUMMER is based on the acclaimed novel by Jay Bell, adapted by Carlos Pedraza. J.T. Tepnapa will direct.

As we prepare to pitch these projects to investors, the recorded table readings give us something tangible to show them. Each film becomes more concrete — more real, if you will — to the people whose support we need to bring the stories to full-fledged life.

With Judas Kiss, this process took two years, from reading to principal photography. This time, we aim to reduce that timeframe to months.

THERE WAS NO Facebook, and little in the way of effective social media, when we started Judas Kiss. Today, we can leverage that technology, and new federal legislation that facilitates crowd funding, to help us make the case for financing our next projects.

We’re chronicling this journey on the Blue Seraph website, and on the Facebook pages for The Dark Place and Something Like Summer, and shortly on new websites for each of the films.

If we learned anything from our experience with Judas Kiss, it’s that a lot of people want to be a part of the stories we want to tell, and we plan to give them every opportunity to do so.

  • Reconcile the roles of producer and writer on the same project.

Hughes writes:

One of the benefits of getting into film festivals is meeting other indie filmmakers that inspire you as you slog from program to program, with a few well-earned pit stops at local bars and coffee shops. Carlos Pedraza and I met in just such a fashion [last year]. His friendship proved one of the most valuable rewards of the film festival experience.

Carlos is a thoughtful writer and methodical producer. He’s been generous enough to share some of his producing tips with me privately and, now, is elaborating on his experiences for our blog readers.

The interview also describes how Pedraza and director J.T. Tepnapa cast up-and-coming young actor Richard Harmon in the starring role as Danny Reyes, as well as their two new features in development, Something Like Summer and The Dark Place.

Hughes is the writer-producer of the award-winning short film, Winner Takes All, and the upcoming Web series, Dumbass Filmmakers.

JUDAS KISS won Gaybies in every category in which it was nominated.

FILM DISTRIBUTOR and online retailer TLA Video awarded Judas Kiss three major awards in its annual TLA Gaybie Awards: Best Drama, Best Lead Actor (Charlie David) and Best Supporting Actor (Sean Paul Lockhart).

APRIL 15: Planet Earth, Meet ‘Judas Kiss’ in HD

After successful launches via traditional media in North America, Europe and Asia, Judas Kiss gets its worldwide digital release in HD on April 15.

“This is our most exciting news since we released the film on DVD last October,” said writer-producer Carlos Pedraza. “Anyone, anywhere on the globe will be able to affordably watch or download Judas Kiss. Even more exciting, viewers will get to share in the film’s financial success.”

Blue Seraph Productions, which produced the film, is offering viewers 10 percent of the proceeds when their friends follow their recommendation to purchase the film for streaming rental or HD download.

“Judas Kiss has done so well so far because people have recommended it to their friends and family,” said director J.T. Tepnapa. “Our worldwide digital release allows us to offer them a reward for their loyalty.”

More importantly, this release expands the film’s reach to the rest of the world where traditional distribution left viewers without a legitimate means to see the it.

STREAMING RENTAL Starting April 15, viewers around the world can watch the film streaming on any Internet-connected device at up to HD resolution (1280 x 720p), depending on their bandwidth. HULU STARTED streaming Judas Kiss on Friday, making the film viewable by virtually anyone with an Internet connection in the United States.

“I can’t express how excited we are that our film is now available in almost every household in the country,” said writer-producer Carlos Pedraza. “Being on Hulu makes it feel like our little independent film is all grown up, and we believe many Hulu viewers will want to own the movie after they’ve watched it.”

BEST ROMANCE 'Something Like Summer' is one of five novels nominated for the prestigious 24th Annual Lambda Literary Awards.

Jay Bell’s novel, Something Like Summer, was named a finalist for Best Romance on Tuesday for the prestigious 2012 Lambda Literary Awards, due to be awarded in June in New York City.

Blue Seraph Productions is co-producing the novel’s screen adaptation, with writer Carlos Pedraza penning the script, and J.T. Tepnapa set to direct the feature film.

“This nomination is a testament to Jay Bell’s fantastic story and compelling characters,” Pedraza said. “This ups the ante for us as we work to bring Something Like Summer to the screen.”

The novel is Bell’s second and most acclaimed, earning a spot in Amazon’s Best Books of 2011 list, with a customer rating of 4.7 out of 5, and outstanding reader reviews on the popular literary site Goodreads.

The awards celebrate achievement in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender writing for books published in 2011. Winners will be announced June 4 in a ceremony in New York.

The nominations were announced in Los Angeles by  the Lambda Literary Foundation. Books from major mainstream publishers and from academic presses, from both long-established and new LGBT publishers, as well as from emerging publish-on-demand technologies, make up the 119 finalists for the “Lammys.” The finalists were selected from a record number of nominations.

Lambda set a record in 2010 for both the number of LGBT books nominated (520) and the number of publishers participating (about 230). That record has been surpassed this year, with more than 600 titles represented from about 250 publishers.

The other books nominated in the Lambdas’ Best Romance category were:

  • Every Time I Think of You, by Jim Provenzano
  • Settling the Score, by Eden Winters
  • Split, by Mel Bossa

OUTTV HAS licensed Judas Kiss for television broadcast, video on demand and DVD in Belgium, the Netherlands and Scandinavia.

OutTV is a lifestyle television network in the Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden, offering internationally acclaimed television programs, art house movies, series and documentaries that push boundaries and stand apart from other networks.

The DVD is scheduled to go on sale near the end of March, according to the network, while the film will begin to air near the end of 2012.

“We’re thrilled to make this announcement,” said Judas Kiss writer-producer Carlos Pedraza. “OutTV provides bold and daring programming with a sense of style and edginess. We think Judas Kiss fits right in.”

THE LICENSING deal covers a broad swath of Europe, including Dutch-speaking Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands and Swedish-speaking Scandinavia. Judas Kiss is already available in much of that territory on iTunes, but only in English.

ACTOR-TV host-singer Timo Descamps

The broadcast deal also includes the extended 40-minute Judas Kiss: Behind the Scenes TV special. The shorter, 22-minute version is currently available to view in four webisodes on YouTube.

The DVD art from OutTV prominently features co-star Timo Descamps, a well-known media figure in Belgium and the Netherlands, where he works as a TV host (for, among other networks, OutTV), actor and recording artist. His single, “Like it Rough,” appears on the Judas Kiss soundtrack album.

Judas Kiss also screened last year in the popular Norrköping, Sweden, Filmfestival Flimmer.

Currently, OutTV is only available in Benelux and Sweden, but the network plans to expand to Germany, Austria and Switzerland as well. Judas Kiss is already available in German-speaking Europe through out distributor, Pro-Fun Media.

“A Blu-Ray release, along with the DVD, is a real vote of confidence for our film in the French market,” said director J.T. Tepnapa. “We’re looking forward to strong sales there, as we’ve had in the United Kingdom and Germany.
The French release is subtitled, with the DVD retailing at €19.99 and the Blu-Ray at €25.00.

The company, which runs the “boutique” site BQHL.com, also distributes books and other products to a wide variety of audiences.

Based in Paris, the media company will distribute the film on its own website, retail outlets, video on demand and other online vendors.

BQHL joins the other European distributors for Judas Kiss, TLA Releasing in the U.K. and Ireland, and Pro-Fun Media in German-speaking Europe, which began distribution last November, following the North American release October 25.

THE ORIGINAL Motion Picture Soundtrack for Judas Kiss goes on sale this week online at iTunes, Amazon Music, Google Music, Spotify and others. Featuring selections from the score by Seattle composer Brad Anthony Laina, the album also showcases independent artists who contributed their work to the film’s soundtrack.

SUPPORT INDEPENDENT artists, as well as filmmakers, by buying the soundtrack. Proceeds from sales go to repay these artists for their creative work.

THE SOUNDTRACK is also available as a physical CD from Amazon.
