Decoding the Director

“MORE ENERGY!”
“Stop acting!”
“Be like fire.”
“Take it down a notch.”

Directors are visionaries. They are able to juggle a dozen things at once and hardly ever drop the ball. Unfortunately, many don’t understand “actorspeak.” Yes, you must always to listen to your director, but many times you have to translate what your director is saying. “More energy” may mean, “act as if he’s torturing you.”  “Take it down a notch,” does not mean, “the same only quieter.” It could be, “whisper as if the words are only meant for her.”

Through script analysis, we can find the decoding tools for a meaningful relationship between actor and director.
